| B@SiC
(Brothers and Sisters in Christ) was formed in the summer of 1997 by three
friends, Damian Broderick (drums), Rob Oag (vocals), and Gary Dickenson
(guitar), all from Southampton (UK). Within a year the three of them had
moved to the East Midlands and teamed up with Dave Thompson (guitar), and Andy Warren
(bass) and the first public appearance of B@SiC was at a Christian youth camp, MCV 1997
(Midland Camping Venture) at Cloverly Hall, Shropshire.
From
there, we slowly started to get more gigs, in pubs and clubs around Nottingham,
including several appearances at the Maze, the Old Vic (home of the "Just
The Tonic" comedy club), Berlins and the Filly and Firkin (see the gigography
page for a complete list).
After
being asked to reappear at MCVs 1998 & 1999, we celebrated our second
anniversary in style by performing as the headline act at the "Absoloot
Pleasure" night at Rock City in Nottingham. Around this time Gary and Dave
moved on and Phil Kinsman joined in late 1999.
2000
became increasingly busy as we started performing again after a period
where we let Phil learn some of the songs. We played a few gigs at the
pub where we practiced (for some archive pictures, see Bramcote
Manor photo page) and then started playing around Nottingham again.
We
also produced our debut EP - Ego? - recorded
with the help of Derby University and the
Pesky Alligators.
This
led to 2001 being very busy, with 25 gigs in the course of the year, the
high point being playing twice at the Greenbelt festival (see Greenbelt
photos for more pictures and what we made of it, and Greenbelt
for the festival homepage). During the Summer we also released our second
EP - Live a Lie. In the Autumn Andy and
Damian also moved on, but we were soon performing again, when John Leary
joined on drums and Dan Rowntree on bass.
2002 was similarly busy, with various gigs (see the gigography
page) and two EPs - www.ep.com - and
Signs of Life where we feel we've managed to sound a bit more as
we are live (that's supposed to be a good thing, right?). Rob buying an 8-track also means
it now only takes a few weeks to record a song, rather than 6 months! We've had a few good reviews for the
demo CDs we've sent out and some very flattering ones for "www.ep.com" (see the reviews
page).
Also during 2002, Rob got married
and moved back to Southampton, so things slowed down a bit with the band, but we were soon back in gear
with the Southampton line-up of B@SiC having had its debut in September 2002, with Dan Friend on drums and and Colin Leigh
on bass, and another recent appearance at the Tonbridge music festival in Kent (click here
for the rather chaotic setlist!). We thought we'd finished after our second set, but we were asked to play a third!
By then we'd done all the songs we'd prepared, so the audience was subjected to a selection of what they'd already heard,
but we seemed to go down well! Colin won Tonbridge Small Businessman of the Year for shifting the most CDs we've ever
sold in one night and we didn't lose or break anything in the course of the evening (apart from one string and a
drumstick!) which is another first!
During 2003 we've been getting busier with playing
live and now also have a saxophone player, Carolyn Chance, to add to the sound and Andy Price has also joined as bass player.
